The 8K Trailer Axle Brake Assembly delivers strong, predictable stopping power for true 8,000 lb axles. It mounts on the left-hand, driver’s side. It uses a 12.25″ drum with 3.375″ wide brake shoes. This size matches standard 8K electric brake systems.
First, installation stays simple. The assembly bolts directly to a 4-bolt brake flange. This flange style is common on 8K axles. It appears often on equipment, dump, and commercial trailers built for long service life. Proper bolt spacing keeps the shoes aligned. As a result, wear stays even and braking stays consistent.
Next, compatibility matters. Part #31-5120 follows Dexter-style 8K electric brake specifications. It fits many Dexter axles and other brands using the same 4-bolt standard. Even better, it arrives fully assembled. The shoes, magnet, springs, and adjuster come pre-installed. So, replacement takes less time and fewer parts.
In addition, the large braking surface improves heat control. It also reduces brake fade under heavy loads. Because of this, it performs well in stop-and-go traffic and on long downhill grades.
However, proper break-in is essential. After installation, make 20 to 30 controlled stops from about 40 mph. Allow short cool-down periods between stops. Avoid hard braking early on. This process seats the shoes to the drum and delivers smooth, reliable braking.
