How to Select the Correct Wheel
Selecting the right wheel for your trailer requires careful attention to detail. Here’s how to do it.
Match Your Bolt Pattern
Every trailer wheel has a specific bolt pattern, fitting into one of a few main categories. To find the right wheel for your trailer, measure the bolt pattern. These are the types of bolt patterns you may have:
- Five-bolt hub: Measure from the outside of the first stud to the center of the third stud (bypassing the stud in between). If the measurement is 4.5 inches, you have a five (number of studs) on 4½ bolt pattern — this pattern is expressed in the format 5-4.5.
- Six-bolt hub: Measure from the center of one stud to the center of the stud directly opposite it (on the opposing end of the hub) to get a bolt pattern like 6-Lug.
- Eight-bolt hub: Measure the same as you would on a six-stud hub (center to center on opposing studs) for a format like 8-Lug.
To choose an appropriate wheel, you also need to know the stud size. To determine this, measure the stud’s width from end to end. For example, if the stud diameter measures 0.5 inches, it’s a half-inch stud.
Confirm Your Wheel Diameter and Width
Once you’ve determined the appropriate bolt pattern and stud size, ensure you know the wheel width and diameter. Most trailer wheels have this information engraved on the wheel, which makes things easier. If your size is too faded to read, you can measure the width and diameter as follows:
- Diameter: Place the wheel flat on its face and measure from the inner edge — the bead seat — to the opposite inner edge. Do not measure from the outer edge.
- Width: Position the wheel as it would be in use. Measure from the bead seat to the bead seat to attain the correct width.
Choose Your Wheel Material
Trailer wheels generally consist of either steel or aluminum.
Steel is a budget-friendly and durable option for wheels. However, it is also heavier and more susceptible to rust. Aluminum is far lighter and more rust-resistant, but it is a higher upfront investment.
