Finding the Right Wheel Bearing for Your Trailer

Here’s how to find a wheel bearing’s size. Remove the bearing from your trailer hub and look for the number on the back. This approach simplifies the identification process.

If the number is worn off, use a digital caliper or tape measure to establish the correct size. Here’s how:

  • Caliper: Place the caliper teeth inside the bearing and open them fully to measure the bearing’s inner diameter accurately.
  • Tape measure: Place the tape over the bearing, aligning the 1-inch mark with the bearing’s inner edge. Measure to the opposite inner edge, then subtract 1 inch — for instance, a 2.16-inch measurement becomes 1.16-inch.

You also need to know the grease seal size, for which you can check the number on the seal.

If the number isn’t visible, follow a similar approach to the one listed above to measure the seal’s inner diameter. Alternatively, measure the spindle diameter at the thicker end where the seal is usually seated. Measure from outer edge to outer edge to determine the seal’s outer diameter as well.

With these measurements, you can select the appropriate wheel bearing kit.

Common Questions About Wheel Bearings

Below, we’ll answer a few of the questions we commonly receive about our wheel bearing kits and hub assemblies.

What is in a Wheel Bearing Kit?

Our trailer wheel bearing kits include bearings, races, seals, a tang washer and a cotter pin. They contain all the main components required to replace the bearings in your trailer’s hubs.

When Should You Replace Trailer Bearings?

You should replace trailer wheel bearings when you encounter problems like:

  • Grinding, whining or roaring noises from the moving wheels.
  • Hubs that are hot to the touch after driving.
  • Grease leaks from the hub, meaning the axle seal has failed.
  • Noticeable side-to-side movement in the wheels.

If none of these symptoms occur, check bearings for signs of wear or damage once a year or every 10,000 miles traveled.

What Is the Difference Between a Bearing Kit and a Hub Assembly?

Wheel bearing kits contain the individual components required to replace a trailer hub’s internal components. Hub assemblies are complete, sealed units that include the wheel hub, bearings and studs in a single, sealed component. Wheel bearing kits can often be more cost-effective, but hub assemblies are easier to install.
