The first step to proper trailer coupler maintenance is ensuring that the inside where the ball sits is free of dirt, dust, and grime. This area can be cleaned by wadding up paper towel and wiping out the contaminants.

The next step is to apply a type of lubricant that will help prevent rust and repel elements such as water, dirt, and dust. Options include lubricants such as chain lube or white lithium grease.

Once you have your chosen lubricant. Apply it to the inside of the coupler and to the ball of your hitch. This will help prevent dry metal on metal contact between the two components. By doing this you will also preserve the life span on both your trailers coupler and your towing vehicles hitch. Most of the wear seen by a trailer hitch takes place on the upper sides of the ball and not the top.
