What Type of Grease Do You Need?
When greasing a trailer’s suspension, it’s best to use two types of grease for proper coverage. First, use a high-temp wheel bearing grease. Load it into a grease gun and pump it through the grease zerks located on the equalizer and shackle bolts. Then, use white lithium grease to lubricate the rest of the suspension system. Apply it to the leaf springs, shackles, and bushings. This second grease helps prevent rust and repels dirt and dust buildup.
Step 1: Grease the Equalizer
To begin, place the grease gun fitting onto the grease zerk on the equalizer bolt. Then, pump grease into the bolt housing. Continue pumping until grease starts to appear behind the hanger. This ensures the entire joint is fully lubricated.
Step 2: Grease the Suspension and Components
Next, focus on the suspension components. Spray white lithium grease directly onto the leaf springs and shackles. For hard-to-reach areas, like the leaf spring bushings, use a straw attachment to direct the spray into the tight gaps. By doing this, you’ll protect key moving parts from corrosion and wear.
