Torsion Axle Brackets & How to Identify Them
In this video we discuss how to identify your torsion axle brackets in three simple steps. We show how to determine different variables including whether it’s long leg in or long leg out along with if it’s a high profile or low profile. Finally, we discuss where to measure from so that you can find your outside of bracket and inside of bracket lengths.
What are Torsion Axle Brackets:
There are two different styles of torsion axle bracket orientations. They are long leg in and long leg out. A long leg in axle bracket means that the part of the bracket that the axle tube runs through is facing towards the center of the axle. A long leg out orientation means that the longer part of the bracket that the axle tube goes through is facing towards the wheel.
In addition to bracket orientation comes bracket profile. Torsion axle brackets are either bolted or welded to the frame and they play a role in determining the trailers ride height. An axle bracket can be flush with the top of the axle making it a low profile bracket and keeping the trailer closer to the grown. These brackets can also rise up and over the top of the axle tube 1″ or 3″ and these are classified as high profile brackets. These brackets allow for the trailer to ride higher in the air allowing for more ground clearance.
How To Measure Your Torsion Axle Brackets:
To measure the distance between torsion axle mounting brackets one needs to find two different measurements. Firstly, the outside to outside of bracket, and next the inside to inside of bracket. This can be performed using a standard tape measure.
To find an outside of bracket measurement, hook a tape measure on the far outside of the bracket that’s closest to the wheel. Next, pull it all the way across the axle to the far outside of the bracket on the other side of the axle. Do not measure to the inside legs of the brackets, only the ones closest to the wheel.
To find an inside of bracket measurement press a tape measure up against the inside leg of the bracket that faces the center of the axle. Then extend the tape across the axle over to the far inside of the bracket on the opposite side. Make sure to measure to the very start of the inner leg.
