Are you wondering how to measure a trailer bolt pattern? In this step-by-step tutorial, we’ll show you how to accurately measure your trailer’s bolt pattern so you can find the perfect fit for new hubs, wheels, or even a complete axle upgrade. Whether you’re a DIY handyman, upgrading your trailer, or searching for replacement parts, this guide is for you!
Learn the difference between 4-lug, 5-lug, 6-lug, and 8-lug patterns and how to measure them precisely. We’ll cover bolt circle diameter (BCD) and explain how to measure the distance between studs for common trailer wheel configurations. Properly measuring your bolt pattern ensures compatibility with your new hub or axle, preventing costly mistakes.
To find the bolt pattern on hubs with an even number of studs simply measure from the center of one stud, directly across the center of the hub to the center of the stud across from the one you started with. To measure hubs with 5 studs place your tape on the outside of one stud, skip one stud and measure to the center of the following stud.
Measurements for a 4 stud bolt pattern can include 4″ or 4.5″. Measurements for a five stud bolt pattern can include 4.5″, 4.75″, 5″, or 5.5″. A six stud bolt set-up only consists of a 5.5″ pattern. Finally an eight lug bolt pattern consists of a 6.5″ pattern.
When measuring the width of a stud simply measure from one side to the other. Options include 1/2″, 9/16″, or 5/8″. You will start to see a change in stud sizes once you get up to 5,200 lb hubs.
