What Type of Grease do You Need?

To grease a trailers suspension it’s best to use two different styles of grease. The first style is a high temp wheel bearing grease. This is put in a grease gun and pumped through the grease zerks on the equalizer and shackle bolts. The second is called lithium grease, and it’s used to lubricate the trailers suspension. White lithium grease is applied to the leaf springs, shackles, and bushings. It’s main purpose is to prevent rust and repels build up of dirt and dust.

Step 1: Grease the Equalizer

To grease the trailer equalizer, start by placing the grease gun fitting on the grease zerk found on the head of the equalizer bolt. Begin pumping grease into the housing until you start to see some emerge behind the hanger.

Step 2: Grease the Suspension and Components

Next you’ll need to grease the trailer’s suspension components – the leaf springs and shackles. To do this, simply spray the white lithium grease directly onto the components. When greasing the leaf spring bushings use a straw to help get into the tight gaps.
