How To Fix a Loose Trailer Hub

In this video, we walk you through diagnosing a loose trailer hub—one of the most common and crucial issues trailer owners face. Learn how to inspect your hub for looseness, identify worn or damaged bearings, spot signs of improper lubrication, and check for any issues with axle nuts and seals.

Step 1: Lift the Wheel and Tire Off the Ground

Start by raising the wheel and tire off the ground. Use a floor jack to lift the trailer. Once it’s off the ground, you can better diagnose the issue. Check the lug nuts first. A loose wheel can feel like a loose hub. If the lug nuts are tight, move on to inspect the hub for play.

Step 2: Remove the Dust Cap and Cotter Pin or Tang Washer

Pop off the dust cap to expose the spindle nut. Remove the cotter pin or tang washer that locks the nut in place.

Step 3: Tighten the Spindle Nut and Check for Play

Check the spindle nut’s tightness. If you can turn it by hand, tighten it until snug. Then test for play by pulling the top of the tire back and forth. If the play or knocking is gone, the hub is tight. Don’t overtighten the spindle nut. That can damage the bearings and hub. If the nut caused the looseness, remove the hub and inspect the bearings and races for wear.

Why It’s Important to Check Your Hubs

A loose hub can damage internal parts like bearings and races. Regular checks and tightening prevent costly repairs. Inspect your hubs today so you never risk losing a wheel on the road.
